Second Stage Housing

The POWA 1st for Women 2nd Stage House was opened in 2009.   1st for Women Insurance Company bought the flats for the organisation.  The main objective of the house is to provide affordable accommodation in the form of a flats to survivors of domestic violence ready to break away from the cycle of abuse.  Staying in these flats is seen as a stepping stone towards survivors achieving a more stable and peaceful living free from abuse

The survivors together with their children can stay for 12 months in these fully furnished flats, thanks to Avon Justine for funding for the furniture. All they need to bring is their personal belongings to bring a personal touch and have a comfortable stay.  Survivors pay minimum rent which goes towards maintenance of the flats, rate and taxes plus the care taker’s salary.

Since the rent that is paid is not enough to cover all the cost incurred and to do proper renovation, POWA is looking for the following assistance to keep the flats in good condition:

  • Donation of paint for the outside wall and fence, interior walls
  • R20000 to install electricity pre- paid meters
  • Garden landscape
  • Wall mirrors and pictures
  • Fixing of drive way to the garage
  • Making bathrooms user friendly to people with disabilities
